Nuclear energy creates an uneasy feeling of danger for many people: ancient and dangerous minerals are concentrated to awaken seemingly unnatural powers, creating toxic elements that, if they escape, can and have killed people in horrible ways. How many people has nuclear energy killed and how?

Unfortunately dying is not the only thing that happens in desasters. In Chernobyl and Fukushima hundreds of thousands had to be ecacuated and lost their home. Also how much territory are you willing to loose in an accident? If a Chernobyl size desaster happend in Slovenia this would mean a territory loss of about 13% of the country. The Ukraine is relatively big, but not all countries can afford to loose 2600km².

Chernobyl was causes by inherently unsafe and outdated reactor design and a lack of following safety protocols. It also did not have lasting damage in a very large area. Fukishima had no fallout and zero territory loss. The reactor is still there, people literally live around it. Nobody lost their home because Fukishima. They lost their homes because of the tsunami.

Unless renewables are more reliable, have a better energy coefficent, and can be stored and released again easily, we do need nuclear energy. I think most anti-nuclear people think that tge technology is still stuck in the 70's and thus are afraid that accidents will happen quick and that waste output is huge. But modern thorium reactors are much safer, cleaner (less waste) and even more efficient than the old reactors. So yeah, we need nuclear AND renewables.

I think what happened is, people looked at the 60km diameter evacuation zone around Chernobyl, put a circle with the same size around german power plants, realized that Germany is smaller than Ukraine but has twice the population and noped out after realizing that any desaster would cause trillions of Euros in damage and would mean millions of displaced people.

No, many people who would like nuclear to expand don't want it to be just a stepping stone to a total renewables domination, they want nuclear to be the solution. There's no feasible energy storage option for renewable, push towards 100% renewable fantasy just solidifies natural gas burning and it's the No.1 distraction to the true solution that is nuclear. Screw you.

I'm not worried about nuclear power as much as how it's managed by humans (and would have to be for thousands of years). @XxBritishGamerxX Where is it? You mean "Do we need nuclear energy to stop climate change"? If so, then I'm kinda disappointed, because it's not anywhere even near in-depth about the topic "nuclear waste" as I would've hoped. It's hardly about nuclear waste at all. I was hoping to see a video containing information specifically about the waste, the so-called "eternal mortgage" that allegedly means "hundreds of millions of years pure death!!!!111", you know? To counter all those misconceptions and irrational fears. Some information about what it actually consists of. Maybe informing the public that most of it is in fact not waste at all and can be reused and that e.g. just a tiny tiny percentage is highly radioactive and that most of it loses it's radiotoxicity rather fast. Maybe a comparison to the amount of "normal" chemical toxic waste (arsenic etc.) of which we produce thousandfold times more each year than radioactive waste in millenia, and which will actually be toxic for all eternity, for even longer than our sun lives. Maybe some facts like that a single coal-fired power plant emits more radioactivity than all nuclear power plants combined. Or that the coal-fired power plants in the USA alone release more radioactivity annually than the reactor accident at Three Mile Island did. That it's actually way, waaaaay "greener" to risk having a reactor accident every now and then, than to keep using that darned coal. And that compared to coal and all the other chemical toxic waste we produce, nuclear waste is actually a non-problem. I was hoping for a video that actually puts nuclear waste into perspective.

If there were large enough tax incentives or so that EVERY home had solar roof panels and a small wind generator and back up storage batteries all connected to the grid, we’d be so far ahead of the game. Every community would be its own power plant. I have solar panels but need the backup storage batteries. They are expensive!!

When I was a kid in the 80s in Southern California, your lungs would hurt after playing outside all day in the summer. I thought that was normal for all kids. With smog regulations it’s obviously better, but I’m in my late 40s now and I wonder how many of us so cal kids have gotten lung cancer or will get it. Can’t believe I breathed in all that crappy air for so many years. Disgusting.

Hmm so... if we stopped using fossil fuels and wanted to switch over to renewable energy, we could use nuclear energy as a temporary substitute until renewable energy developed enough to meet humanity's requirements... and even then nuclear energy won't be as harmful as fossil fuels, while still meeting most energy requirements. Sorry, why can't scientists run the world already?

Incredibly biased. What about the lives that fossil fuels save? All the lives that are saved by having homes heated, cities powered. Also increased quality of life extends peoples lives. Those facts matter way more.

@Sam D26 not your decision. It costs billions of dollars to build nuclear plants that someone has to pay for... And nuclear waste that you bury isnt much better than c02 emissions... And the potential catastrophe is not something that everyone is comfortable with. Especially on the psychological level.

@Nicolás Zan fossil fuels saves lives by using the same logic the video uses by saying fossil fuels end lives. One can argue that fossil fuels saves by everything that it powers and all the machines that it powers to literally get people to hospitals or keep alive. The counter argument is retarded. Well if fossil fuels didnt exist then alternative energy would just take its place. That's not true. Its inferior, unreliable, and more expensive. This isnt hypotheticals. This is fact. Opportunists/capitalists are the one driving this agenda because they want to make boat loads of money off using inferior energy and products.
